NEW HAVEN—A long-awaited $50 million-plus apartment project that borders the Dixwell and Newhallville neighborhoods has been completed.
City officials and the developer gathered at the site of the five-story, 176-unit apartment complex called Cadence on Canal Tuesday to celebrate reaching the finish line on a project some thought impossible to achieve.
That’s because 58 of the studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units in the complex are set aside for affordable housing that would have otherwise priced long-time residents out of the neighborhood.
But the developers did not cut costs in order to make the complex profitable for them and affordable for others, including a gym, professional kitchen and work space for residents. The building also features artistic content supplied by local artists in exchange for subsidizing their rent.
“This project was particularly challenging,” said Yves-Georges A. Joseph II, CEO of RJ Development + Advisors LLC. “It’s not free to develop affordable housing. It is Class A. It is a luxury building.”
